Hey friend! How you’re doing?
I am melting like butter because it’s hot as hell here. But I’m also very excited to draw!
Recently I’ve finished Dungeon Meshi (aka Delicious in Dungeon) and ohhh boi I just loved it! The characters are fun, the world-building is interesting, the food is delightfully creative and the character designs are peak. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for something fun to watch with a healthy balance of goofiness, friendship, and emotional damage.
One of the things that most caught my eye was how diverse the characters were. The world of Dungeon Meshi is full of monsters and magical creatures like elves, dwarves, hal-foots, etc… And all of them look so different!
It always annoys me when I’m watching something (usually fantasy) and, the male presenting characters are so diverse in personality and design while the female presenting ones are *sighs* sexy anime girls with blue skin and/or hair.
But Delicious in Dungeon is nothing like that! Each lineage has very clear traits and they are not simply erased just because the character is a woman. I wondered how Ryoko Kui (the creator of the manga) learned to create such unique characters!
That’s when I stumbled across something called “Daydream Hour “, which is nothing less than Ryoko’s sketchbook!
And ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh boi if I hadn’t just spent a bunch of money on my moving I would have bought the entire collection. Just looking at some of the pages I found I could see how well Ryoko knows her characters. She explores how they look, act, and present themselves. Not two faces are the same.
And that obviously made me want to fill a gigantic sketchbook right away! Which I didn’t but I have started to sketch more often. I’m doing anatomy and animal studies and I hope one day I can get so comfortable drawing my characters as she does.
Here are some fun little sketches I did (please ignore my laios, didn’t have the time to work on him lol)
And here is some Marcille fanart.
Well that’s everything for today friend! I hope you have liked this chat and I hope to see you soon.
From your weird art friend,
Puffy.
